6 Fun and Engaging End of Year Activities for the Classroom

The end of the school year can be a fun time.  You've had a great year (hopefully), things are winding down, and everyone is ready for summer break.  Of course, it can also be stressful because you've completed all of your curriculum, grades are done, and now you've got all this time you need to fill.  Here are some fun end of the year activities to help you fill that time.

1. Create a Memory Wall

Have each student bring in a photo of themselves from throughout the year and hang them up in the classroom. Then have the students reminisce about their favorite memories from the school year. This is a great way to get students up and moving. Have them move around the classroom to find partners to talk to about the memories. You can then extend the activity even more by having them write about those memories.

2. End of Year Scavenger Hunt

Have the students break into small groups and complete a scavenger hunt around the classroom or school campus. Each group will have to search for certain items, answer questions, and complete challenges. This helps students get in that social aspect that they really need as they get restless at the end of the school year.

Have iPads in your classroom? Make it a photo scavenger hunt where groups need to find certain things in the classroom or around the school and take photos of the items.  You could even extend the activity by having them create a Google Slide show and then have them present it to the class.

3. Make a Yearbook

Have each student create a page in a yearbook that includes their favorite memories from the school year, as well as a photo of themselves. Put the pages all together into a book and keep the book out for future classes to look through. Future students will enjoy getting to see what past students did in the class.

4. Class Videos

Have the students write, direct, and star in their own class videos. This can be done through skits, lip syncing, or singing. Let each group decide what kind of video they want to create and watch that creativity soar. For accountability, have each group plan it out and present their plan to you before they create the video. After the videos have been created, have the groups share the videos that they created with the rest of the class.

5. Class Awards

Have each student create an award for one of their peers. This can be based on the funniest moment of the year, the most helpful student, or the best artist in the class. Brainstorm possible awards as a class and then let students create those awards. They can design a certificate for the award and then present it to the person receiving it, explaining why they chose that award.

6. Baby Pictures

One of my favorite end of year activities is showing students' baby pictures and having them guess who they belong to. I email parents and ask them to send in a baby photo and then I create a baby picture slide show. As I show each baby picture, the class tries to guess who each picture is of.  They love seeing the pictures of each other and trying to guess who the pictures belong to.

Incorporating fun end of year activities can make an enjoyable end of the school year for both you and the class.  What are some of your favorite end of year activities?
